JJ World Cup Pro coming up
After the trials, check out who’s packing their bags

The eyes of the competition Jiu-Jitsu world were turned to California past this weekend, where the 15th Jiu-Jitsu Pan-American took place. Now it’s the Middle East’s turn to get all the attention.

That is where the World Cup JJ Pro will take place, on May 1st and 2nd, in the city of Abu Dhabi, U.A.E. Organized by black belt Carlos Santos and sponsored by Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the competition promises to bring the level of competition Jiu-Jitsu up a notch. There’s no lack of incentive, as more than US$ 111 thousand and medals are up for grabs.

With the tournament a month away, the names to qualify for the all-expense-paid trip to compete were defined, in the six qualifiers that took place around the world, were announced. From Brazil, the standouts were: Guilherme Mendes (-65kg); Gustavo Campos (-85) Cláudio Calasans (-75), among others. These athletes will have fight, room and board all paid for by the committee organizing the event which, Carlos Santos always emphasizes, is open to all competitors. The difference being that those selected go for free, while the others interested in competing will have to pay their own way.

Sign-ups are now open. To guarantee your place by April 18, the fee is US$ 40. Then it raises to US$ 60.

World Professional JJ Cup in 1 & 2 May
Tournament pay-out over 111 thousand dollars

After an end of the year with more than attractive prize money for gentle art competitors in the Middle East (Asian Super Cup and Capital Challenge), 2009 is showing signs of being another prosperous year for Jiu-Jitsu practitioners. And anyone who wishes to can start training hard right after New Year’s, since the 1st and 2nd of May will be the maiden World Professional JJ Cup in Abu Dhabi.

Event organizer Carlao Santos informed GRACIEMAG.com that total prize money for the event will be 111 thousand dollars. To the Carioca black belt, it will be more than just a “championship,” but a “Jiu-Jitsu show.”

“The World Professional JJ Cup will be a show. We are treating this event not just as a championship, but a BJJ mega show: 111 thousand dollars in prizes, besides six qualifiers in the lead up. This will be the first Pro BJJ mini-circuit in history. We will have a qualifying tournament in Brazil, for all of South America. In North America, there will be one in Florida and another in Canada. After that there will be one in Japan and another in Spain, for Europe, and in Australia. April 30 will be the opener and May 1 and 2, the Pro Worlds,” explained Carlao.

And speaking of shows, the stars to participate cannot be left out. Excited with the preparations underway, Carlao promises 2009 will have even better infrastructure that that of this year. “The competition will be the best and most professional possible. The fighters can expect, as they will be treated as stars, to be received as great sportsmen. Especially since the event will be covered by TV channels from several parts of the world. There will be television channels from Europe, Brazil, Japan, Australia covering the event. The champions will become Jiu-Jitsu superstars,” said Carlao in finishing.

Depois de um final de ano com premiações para lá de atrativas para os competidores da arte suave no Oriente Médio (Asian Super Cup e Capital Challenge), 2009 dá sinais que será também um próspero ano novo para os praticantes da arte suave. E quem quiser, pode esperar o reveillon passar para começar a treinar duro desde já, pois nos dias 1 e 2 de maio tem a estréia do World Professional JJ Cup de Abu Dhabi.

O organizador Carlão Santos informou ao GRACIEMAG.com que as premiações para esse campeonato somam um total de 111 mil dólares. Para o faixa-preta carioca, não se apenas trata de um “campeonato”, e sim um “show de Jiu-Jitsu”.

“O World Professional JJ Cup será um show. Estamos tratando este evento não como um campeonato, e sim como um mega show de BJJ: 111 mil dólares em prêmios, além das seis seletivas anteriores. Esse será o primeiro mini-circuito mundial Pro de BJJ da História. Teremos uma seletiva no Brasil, pra todos da América do Sul. Na América do Norte, uma na Flórida e outra no Canadá. Depois uma no Japão e outra na Espanha, pra Europa, e Austrália. Dia 30 de abril é a abertura e dia 1o e 2 maio, o Mundial Pro”, explicou Carlão.

Empolgado com os preparatórios, Carlão promete para 2009 uma infra-estrutura melhor ainda do que a vista esse ano. “A competição será a melhor e mais profissional o possível. Os lutadores podem esperar, pois serão tratados como estrelas, como grandes esportistas. Ainda mais que o evento vai ser coberto por várias TVs do mundo. Vai ter televisão da Europa, Brasil, Japão, Austrália fazendo a cobertura. Os campeões, vão virar super stars do Jiu-Jitsu no mundo”, finalizou Carlão.
